People often ask me which is best, Mat Pilates or Pilates using the apparatus such as the reformer. My answer is simple, which ever you prefer will get you the most benefits. If your instructor is experienced and classes aren't large, they can tailor the difficulty of Mat or Equipment Pilates depending on the level you are working at. One of the main concepts of the Pilates Method which I love is simply to "listen to your body'. It sounds easy but in our modern world this has been forgotten and it takes time and the guidance of your instructor to ensure you create body awareness during movement. This will ensure you work at the correct pace and level for you during every class. Pilates is a low-impact exercise that builds your core, strength, improves balance, alignment, posture, co-ordination, flexibility and connects the mind to the body, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Breathing can also be incorporated into sessions which aids in relaxation and reducing stress levels. I often get people to move first as most bodies benefit from this and we work on breath techniques over time. I hope this answers any questions you may have had about Mat Pilates with us.
